Orkney salmon farming salaries up by a quarter in 2015

The salmon farming industry’s latest economic survey confirms that 135 people are employed in Orkney in a variety of farming and office based roles. These employees have also seen a collective pay increase of over a quarter (26%) reaching £2.6m in 2015.

Salmon farming continues to play a prominent role in rural life and is often seen as a mainstay employer, especially in remote locations where secure employment and career opportunities can be difficult to find.

The reshaping of the workforce across Scotland has seen the number of full-time positions increase to 93% and a corresponding drop in part-time and seasonal positions, indicating a positive trend with long term, sustainable jobs and career prospects reflecting the industry’s development.
