Following an October event in Argyll and Bute, the Scottish Salmon Company, SSPO and Council representatives met in the Western Isles on 2nd November to launch the Scottish salmon industry’s Community Engagement Charter. The event was repeated in Highland region and will be run in Shetland and Orkney before the year end to inform councils and communities of the industry’s commitment to invest and engage with the rural areas where they operate. The Charter formalises this commitment.
Young athletes benefiting from salmon company support joined the meeting in Stornoway as an example of how local engagement can be valuable, both to the industry and to rural populations. As major contributors to these fragile economies, salmon farmers take seriously their responsibility to act as a good neighbour, providing training and careers for young people, support for the community infrastructure and for local good causes.
