Scottish salmon industry celebrates Modern Apprenticeship success

Two salmon farmers talk about Modern Apprenticeships in aquaculture in the Scottish Parliament

Hayley Eccles of Scottish Sea Farms and Lisa Askham of The Scottish Salmon Company, both finalists in Lantra’s Land-based and Aquaculture Learner of the Year Awards, shared their experiences of working and learning through Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) within salmon farming.

MAs provide businesses with an effective way to their train staff, as they give employees aged 16 or over practical experience in the workplace and technical training off-site. This benefits both apprentice and employer, giving Scotland’s aquaculture industry the skilled and knowledgeable workers it needs.

Anne MacColl, Chair of the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO) also spoke of the positive effects MAs are having on Scottish salmon production:

“The Scottish salmon industry has made, and will continue to make, a significant commitment to Modern Apprenticeshipsboth for school leavers and for existing employees. These are exciting times and an opportunity for our industry to work in collaboration, and as part of Scotland’s highly successful food and drink industry.”

The celebratory event was attended MSPs, Modern Apprentices, training providers and representatives of aquaculture businesses.
