SSPO comments on the use of acoustic devices on farms (ADDs)

Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation (SSPO) explains that some Scottish farms use acoustic deterrent devices to deter predators and prevent attacks on salmon.

“The primary job of salmon farmers is to rear healthy fish and keep them safe. Protecting farmed salmon from seal attacks is a challenge. The industry employs a range of techniques to protect salmon; from netting to acoustic devices to deter seals from farms. The decision on which approach is used, is taken on a site by site basis by companies.

“The fish farming industry continues to work with agencies and universities to research and develop new and effective techniques to ensure the balance between protecting farmed salmon and deterring seal attacks so farms and wildlife can co-exist in our shared marine environment.”
